The Artraker Fund

The Artraker Fund was established in 2012 by INCAS Consulting Ltd and is the brainchild of political artist, Manali Jagtap-Nyheim. The Fund celebrates and awards new ideas and art works that make a direct positive change in countries which have experienced social upheaval and violent conflict.

Our name is derived from “Muckraker”, a term coined by President Theodore Roosevelt in 1906. It refers to the adversarial journalistic movement before the First World War that investigated and published truthful reports on social issues. “Artraker” draws on this tradition.

A first of its kind, the Fund aspires to create fertile ground for the encounter and exchange between peace-makers and peace-builders on the one hand, and artists operating in this environment but using different methodologies.

Walking Peace Residency

23 of May - 26 of June

Walking Peace - part of a EU-project
The theme residency "Walking Peace" is created by ARNA as part of a rural development project run by Leader Lundaland called "Land & Environment". Leader is a project model within European Union, supporting entrepreneurship on the countryside, also within culture. Leader Lundaland's support for the theme residence of "Walking Peace" is also a support for ARNA's green vision to become an international and creative hub for new connections between art and nature. ARNA cooperate with the The Church of Sweden and the Pilgrim Way in Skåne and Blekinge.

Walking trails
In The Avian Kingdom 3 walking trails follow the same path for 13 km; 2 pilgrim trails and 1 hiking trail. At the very spot where they meet in Harlösa, with a beautiful view out over the landscape, we hope to build our future residency center. As part of the vision to be a venue where art, nature and people of all cultural background meets, ARNA has created the combined art project and residency stay with the name ”Walking Peace”; a green, peaceful way of making new connections across cultural backgrounds and religions to create art as a statement for peace.

The art project "Walking Peace" offer
  • 3 artists Accommodation Grants, meaning free stay at ARNA for 5 weeks for the period of 23 of May – 26 of June. You live at the same place the whole time.
  • We organize the art project and help you out with the practicalities during your participation, fx all transportations. You will be given guided introduction to the project and meet interesting people.
  • Local exhibition and press contacts during the project.
  • We will invite parishes, religious communities of different confessions and the press to walk along with us, shorter or longer parts. Hopefully this will create a lot of interests around the project for peace.
  • We pick you up with car at nearest trainstation at arrival.
  • You will meet a lot of friendly people in informal and inspiring ways.
  • You will see Sweden's nature at its best time of year, also be here over our famous Midsummer celebrations.

We ask of you
  • To be yourself - Make a personal and artistic interpretation of your participation in the art project ”Walking Peace”.
  • To do at least 15 days of work for the art project, during your stay of up to 33 days. As part of our projects funding you will be asked to fill in a diary for at least 75 hours of work, walking days included.

Allianz Cultural Foundation Grants for Artists in Europe

The Allianz Cultural Foundation addresses primarily exceptionally gifted young academics and artists in Europe. In particular, we support cooperative projects with involved partners from at least three countries. In addition to the required artistic, academic or respectively educational quality, the project application has to point out, that the participating project partners share the financial and thematic responsibility and cooperate at eye level. Special attention is paid to projects, which enable long-term networks between the involved artists and project partners. Hence the Allianz Cultural Foundation only supports projects but no institutions. The Allianz Cultural Foundation focuses on particular regions within Europe. Aside from the countries of Central and South-eastern Europe the focal point of the next years lies on the Mediterranean area.

The criteria for funding focus on contemporary concepts of every genre and media which prove new ideas in the arts, culture and education. The projects may also be workshops, whereas the active knowledge transfer and the exchange of experiences between the participants are valued just as the result itself. Furthermore, sponsored projects should on the long run appeal to a larger audience than only professionals.

Project applications – the most important at a glance
The deadline for project applications for this year has expired on April 30, 2012. Applications for projects in 2014 have to be handed in at the Allianz Cultural Foundation on March 31, 2013, at the latest. Please send your applications via email as well as via mail. The application should not include more than five pages. In your budget planning (part of the application), you should clearly indicate what concrete subtotal you apply for, and for what purposes. Furthermore we would kindly like to ask you to fill out the "project sheet" (max. 2 pages) which you can find on top of this page. As a matter of principle, the Allianz Kulturstiftung only co-finances projects, and never assumes full financing.

In accordance with the Foundation's programme the following are, as a rule, not entitled to grants:
  • Supporting individuals or institutions as far as they are not committed to special projects of the Allianz Kulturstiftung as project partners
  • The allocation of scholarships
  • The promotion of individual third party publications
  • The promotion of any kind of productions (e.g. film, theatre)
  • Institutional aid without concrete links to projects (e.g. renovations, instruments, technical equipment and real estate)
  • Refinancing projects which have already finished
  • Events in the entertainment sphere or those where the Allianz Kulturstiftung has been approached with a view to commercial promotion activities
The application procedure
The duration of the project aid is always limited in terms of time. Applications for grants addressed to the Foundation should outline the planned project and beyond that, should embrace a detailed concept of the project as well as a schedule and financial plan. The applications have to be handed in via email as well as via mail.
Should the sponsoring principles of the Foundation be fulfilled, the application is presented to the interdisciplinary Advisory Board for discussion, since this is the board for academic and artistic matters that bears responsibility for the quality of the projects selected. The Advisory Board then makes its respective recommendation to the Board of Trustees, which - having the authority to specify guidelines - makes the final decision for the sponsorship programme.
Aktion KulturAllianzen
In addition to its cooperational projects all over Europe, the Allianz Kulturstiftung is also engaged at a local and regional level in Germany with its Aktion KulturAllianzen. As an independent project within the Foundation's sponsorship programme it accompanies and aids the cultural commitment of representatives of the Allianz SE on a local level. At the moment aid is limited to 2,250 euros per project, two thirds of which comes from the Allianz Kulturstiftung, one third from the local Allianz representative. Further information on this project can be found under projects on this homepage.

The Colección Patricia Phelps de Cisneros (CPPC) and Independent Curators International (ICI) are pleased to announce an open call for curators: The 2013 Colección Patricia Phelps de Cisneros Travel Award for Central America and the Caribbean. In its second edition, this travel award will support a contemporary art curator based anywhere in the world to travel to Central America and the Caribbean to conduct research about art and cultural activities in the region. Intending to generate new collaborations with artists, curators, museums, and cultural centers in the area, this award will cover curatorial residencies, studio visits, and/or archival research.

The CPPC Travel Award will support a curator to visit either one or multiple locations in Central America and the Caribbean, and will prioritize first encounters, allowing curators that have not traveled to the region to make connections and develop networks. The travel period can be anywhere between three weeks and three months, and take place between May and November 2013. The grant will cover costs of up to $10,000. Funds can be requested to visit one or more of the following countries: Belize, Costa Rica, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras, Nicaragua, and Panama; and, in the Caribbean: The Antilles, The Bahamas, Colombia (Caribbean region), and Turks and Caicos Islands.

Independent curators and those with institutional affiliations may apply. Applications from established and emerging curators (3+ years professional experience) will be considered.

APPLICATION PROCESS + GUIDELINES
To be considered a candidate for the 2013 Travel Grant, a full proposal must contain the following:
•  A letter of approximately 1,500 words (3 pages) describing the proposal for curatorial research for which funds are being requested. This should include a short summary on the reasons why the research is important and why it should happen now, the applicant’s relationship to the region, as well as the names of any artists, curators, collections, archives, or institutions with which the applicant hopes to spend time.
•  A travel itinerary or plan for the residency program with proposed dates of travel (one page)
•  A budget covering all travel research costs including any per diem, fees, and translation expenses (one page)
•  A Curriculum Vitae (abridged to no more than 3 pages)

Format: The required documents should be sent by email to research@curatorsintl.org with Travel Award in the subject line. No printed versions should be sent via post. The letter, travel itinerary, budget, and CV should be page-numbered and sent as one single PDF.

Language: Applications may be submitted in English or Spanish.

A jury of professionals who live in, or have extensive knowledge of the region will select the successful applicant.

Grantees are expected to make their own travel arrangements, including securing Visas, if needed. If not fluent in local languages, grantees must allocate funds for a translator. On completion of travel a report of approximately 1,500 words on the outcomes of research is required, together with a budget outlining how the money was spent. Awardees are also expected to submit photographs and a research report on activities in the region that will contribute to the online Journal resource on ICI’s website.

The first CPPC Travel Award was granted in 2012 and was given in honor of curator Virginia Pérez-Ratton (1950-2010) who was internationally renowned for working with contemporary artists in Central America and the Caribbean. As a resource complementing the CPPC Travel Award, ICI hosts an online platform that provides information about Pérez-Ratton as well as the institutions, archives, collections, and cultural activities in the region. This resource will also eventually include accounts from the Travel Award grantee.
